Neva Masquerade Dorothy will take over Labrador Connie’s spot in the Kremlin

June 4, 2008

Cat lovers are rejoicing nationwide. Putin’s Labrador Connie will soon pass the baton of Russia’s favorite household pet to Dmitriy Medvedev’s cat Dorothy. Medvedev’s wife Svetlana came up with the idea of taking in a cat.

Darling Dorothy is a variety of the Siberian Neva Masquerade from Saint Petersburg. He has a rare blue tabby point color pattern, with light grey fur and blue eyes. His muzzle, paws and the tip of his tail are dark grey. Like all “Siberians,” Dorothy is exceptionally fluffy. His parents picked him out at the breeders only four years ago, when he was just a few months old. Although Dorothy’s parents are champions, he hasn’t participated in any exhibitions. Dorothy’s royal blood, though, gives him away — he’s as fickle as a Tsar when it comes to food.

Generally speaking, Neva Masquerades are known for their congenial disposition. However, Dorothy has a competitive spirit that’s not to be reckoned with. At a young age, he’s already endured a political scandal of his own after brawling with former neighbor Mikhail Gorbachev’s cat. Admittedly, Dorothy came out as the loser. Gorbachev’s cat beat him so severely that few thought that Dorothy would survive. Doctors injected him with antibiotics for the duration of the following month. The Medvedevs then decided to castrate Dorothy to ensure that he wouldn’t fight again. So, unfortunately, the prospects of adopting a kitten from a presidential litter are few.

Medvedev isn’t exactly an inveterate cat lover. He seriously considered bringing home a dog after Putin’s beloved Connie had her litter. Medvedev happily agreed to adopt a pup, but later had to refuse when he discovered that his family members were allergic to dogs. READ MORE
